1970s UK School Science Facilities
Science teachers consider science to be underfunded now, but consider how it was in the 1970s in one school in Wigan, England. The school had to buy soda glass testtubes that crack as soon as they are heated above 100 C because they could not afford the expensive pyrex ones. Goggles were shared between chemistry labs, with only 16 pairs available anyway. When students worked in pairs one student would be told to just look away, you'll be fine! The head of chemistry would eveaporate iodine solution to recover the iodine. The solution would be heated in an oven where a class was working and purple fumes would be seen coming out of the oven. There was one safety screen between four labs and technicians would move it to the lab where it was to be used. There was no fume cupboard, smelly experiments were done outside. There was not a single science text book, but thousands of 3 colour worksheets copied using a Banda machine. These were made by a teacher writing, yes writing, using 3 different colour carbon papers. This was extremely messy and the fumes from the solvent were horrendous. There were asbestos mats and wire gauzes that the local authority had to provide special money to replace. This school was a RC church 11-16 high school. The bibles and prayer books were replaced every year. |
