American or European Fridge Freezer?
Are you in the middle of a kitchen revamp? What we in Europe call "American fridge freezers" are little more than tall, thin freezer and refrigerator units side by side in a single cabinet. Some have bells and whistles like ice makers, chilled water on tap and so on. Shelves are very narrow on theses "American" appliances and your storage options are not as marvellous as you might think. Keeping up with the neighbours is not the best reason to buy anything. There is now an alternative style of fridge freezer that the shops call "European fridge freezers", though most of them come from Australia. The "European" fridge freezer has fridge and freezer compartments mounted one above the other. It is a lot wider than the standard two feet and has a lot more storage than the fridge in the American fridge freezers. You can stand a 4 pack of beer upright on a shelf, on 5 shelves in fact. You can slot in pans of soup, curry and stock without any problem at all. There is also a double drawer at the bottom for storage of fruit and vegetables, increasing the time they stay in good condition. I have one of these European/Australian fridge freezers and everyone who comes in wants to open it to see how much space there is. Without exception, everyone who has seen it has plans to replace their American fridge freezer with a European one. |
