Buying a decent spec PC from Dell
Lots of people buy computers from Dell, because they offer all sorts of options to customise your desktop or laptop computer. Choose a computer where Dell offers Windows XP Pro as an option. There will be a small charge for XP. Opt for 2 Gigabytes of RAM with your Windows XP machine. With Windows Vista you would need 4 Gigabytes to obtain the same performance. If you are buying a laptop opt for a nine cell battery. The extra money it costs gets you a much improved battery life. When choosing your processor, ignore the most expensive option altogether. If you want a computer that will stay up to date longer then opt for the next processor down, or wherever the big price drop happens. Even the slowest processor will be much faster than the computer you are replacing. Look for at least 512Mb and preferably 1024Mb of dedicated video memory. This will allow you to run more than one program without any reduction in performance. Choose the best quality monitor you can afford for a desktop computer. You are going to be spending many hours browsing the Internet with tiny typed pages and a good monitor will cause you less eye-strain. For a laptop choose a 15.4 inch screen. This is quite big enough and keeps the weight down and your battery life up.
