Convert your photos to x-stitch charts

Cross stitching is an immensely popular hobby amongst men and children, as well as the more obvious women stitchers.

Most people are introduced to the art by a friend or relative. Introductory patterns can be found in the many x-stitch magazines and on many websites. These introductory patterns have larger blocks of colour and use a limited range of thread colours. All children appreciate cross stitch pictures displaying items of their special interest, from trucks and tractors to horses and puppies.

Many stitchers go on to larger and more complex patterns, which may need hundreds of different colour threads.

One of the most common questions that new stitchers ask is, "Can I turn this photo into a x-stitch pattern?"
The answer is "Yes you can, but it is complicated and you have to buy photo editing software as well as special computer x-stitch software and learn to use it all properly." This puts most people off.

X-stitch photos have enormous appeal though, and most stitchers would still like to produce cross-stitch pictures of pets, homes and children from their own photographs. Cross stitched pictures of a child or pet make wonderful presents for the proud parents or pet owner.

As an alternative to struggling with the software yourself, you can pay someone who has bought the software to convert your photo to a x-stitch pattern. There are many ads in the x-stitch magazines for this service.

You do need to select photos carefully, because not all will transfer successfully to the cross-stitch medium. The photo should have good contrast and the subject should be a simple one. Pictures of individuals work better than pictures of groups. Edit any red-eye from the photo before sending it off for conversion. Large x-stitch patterns need large photos and look much better when complete.

Cross-stitching means that your picture will lose detail compared to an enlarged photograph. This is why large photos work better than small ones, less detail is lost and the subject is more recognizable in the finished work.

Most photo to x-stitch conversion services offer conversion to sepia tones or to monochrome (black and white) x-stitch patterns for the same price. The colour conversion is very simple and quick to achieve using good photo editing software. Some companies offer to reduce the number of colour threads used in the x-stitch pattern. This means that you will lose some detail, but the stitching will be less complex. The trade off is between the number of colours used and the level of detail in the x-stitched picture. The more the number of colours is reduced, the more detail is lost.

The services work in different ways. Usually you email a photo to the company and pay them. They email you a pdf file for you to print out that includes stitching charts and a table listing all the threads you will need. Alternatively the company may post you the printed chart and thread list, together with a picture of the finished product. Sometimes the company will suggest editing the photo and send you their suggested modifications to your picture with the reasons why they consider these to be necessary.
