Cranes - Contract Lifts

Only crane companies usually rent cranes. You and I need a Contract Lift, even though we might think we need crane hire.

Cranes are large, complex and very expensive pieces of machinery, costing upwards of half a million dollars. Nobody hires out this sort of stuff to Joe Soap who walks in off the street. It takes an expert to even decide what kind of crane you need! There are insurance issues as well as health and safety issues involved.

Crane rental companies have a complete range of industrial cranes available for hire. If you think you need a crane, brief a crane hire company with your needs. An expert will probably need to make a site visit to decide which of their cranes could do the job.

The crane company needs to see the site because cranes are very heavy pieces of machinery and they need a solid area to put down their jacks. The type of crane provided will also depend on the weight of the load and the distance from the crane that it will be moved. Do you remember the principle of moments from school physics? The effect of the Law of Moments is that the same crane can move a light object further away from its base than it can a heavy object. There are tables showing what distance a specific type of crane can move objects of different weights form the centre of rotation, centre of slew.

To rent a crane and operate it yourself you would need to satisfy the crane hire company that you had a trained operator, and sufficient insurance to cover loss or damage of the crane, as well as third party cover for any damage to others' lives or property.

A Contract Lift gets around most of the difficulties. Everything is left in the hands of the crane rental company. The company handles the choice of crane. The raising of a Risk Assessment Statement and a Method Statement for the lift are handled by the company's trained and qualified person.

In a contract lift the crane company handles traffic control, planning of the lift, insurance and crane operation on the day itself. No risk remains with the customer, everything is assumed by the rental company from initial plans right through to the final lift.

The planning necessary for a Contract Lift means that crane rental companies need time and do not operate on a ring us and we will be there in 2 hours basis.
