English Tuition Agencies
A Tuition agency acts as a middle man between parents looking for tuition and a tutor. Judging from the growth in the number of tuition agencies it is a highly profitable business! A tuition agency needs a licence as an employment agency. Check that any agency that you apply to for work is registered, many are not. Many parents prefer to find a tutor through an agency because they think that the agency vets its tutors. Some agencies may do, but most do not. In my experience a good tutor does not need to use an agency because he or she has a full diary through recommendations. The only reason anyone would continue to use an agency after 12 months of tutoring is because of laziness or incompetence. Agencies work in different ways, but essentially they take a cut out of your tuition income. The agency may take as much as 25% of your gross, before tax, income. The agency fee is tax deductible, but who wants to lose 25% of their income, which could amount to hundreds of pounds from each student? Some agencies send out postal lists of local tutors to people making enquiries. The letter gives your phone number and a price range that you can charge within. You contact the client and decide how much you charge. Agencies may charge you a percentage of the income from each client they find for you, or a flat rate for each hour you work with a client. You keep records and notify the agency each month of the number of hours worked with agency clients. Other agencies charge the client directly and pay you a percentage of the money collected. Agencies using the first charging structure have found that tutors lie about the number of hours worked, so they employ local checkers who phone clients to ask them how many hours they have paid for. If you cheat them, they will find out sooner or later, but all they have ever done to me is take me off their books, though maybe they tell the tax man about you, as well. If you are just starting to give private tuition then you can consider using an agency, at least for the autumn term, when clients are in short supply. It is useful to know how much the agencies charge clients anyway, because that is the maximum that you can charge. You should consider taking out a classified ad in the local paper to tell people about your services. I always find that the ad below works well: Chemistry tuition in your home. GCSE, A-level. Experienced teacher, examiner. Tel: 0234567890 The ad will pay for itself if you find one tutee in a week. Paying for advertising works out a much lower cost than paying tuition agency fees. If you do have agency clients and you are looking to maximise your income then don’t worry about double booking these tutees, you will often find that the student is out at the arranged time, or refuses to answer the door, at least if you ahve double booked you are still earning. The airlines do it, so should you.
