Handling Classroom Confrontation
Every teacher meets confrontational situations in the classroom. It is best to manage the situation to avoid confrontation in the first place, but it is important to learn how to handle the situation so that the minimum damage is done to teacher or student. 1. Isolate the student, never allow the situation to develop in front of a class, where both parties' main priority is to avoid any loss of face. Ask the student to step outside the classroom to discuss the issue. 2. Never stand between the student and the exit. This way the worst possible scenario is that the student storms off. No physical contact is necessary because the student does not have to push you aside to get away. 3. Try to keep some physical barrier, maybe a desk or chair between yourself and the student. This makes it much less likely that the situation will become physical. 4. Smile. This has an amazing effect on the student's attitude, be careful that you are smiling in an understanding way and cannot be seen as laughing. 5. Remember that the student has to save face as much as you do. Work on a solution that allows both of you to walk away without any major climb down. 6. It is a good idea to be sitting down when you are talking to an argumentative or confrontational student. The time for height dominance is past. More subtle body language is needed to defuse the situation. Sitting down shows you are confident and calm. 7. Control your voice. Avoid shouting because you lose control of the pitch of your voice. You are the adult and it is for you to take control in a calm manner. You will lose face in any shouting match because this would often escalate into physical contact and the student will usually run off rather than actually hit you. |
