Health & Safety issues seem to be in the news every day as employees and the general population become more aware of the duty of care that employers and others have to those on their premises. The way that the law has become involved on many occasions has raised the profile of H&S in businesses and in the public sector. There has been a consequent growth in the number of people with qualifications in the area and information on the subject is more widely available online. Employers’ responsibilities are many. They must minimise the risk of injury to employees and visitors. Employers must be aware of the part that stress plays in health issue amongst their employees. They must minimise noise levels and provide ear protection. The responsibilities are massive and the list very long. Every business must have a risk assessment made for every conceivable health and safety issue. Some industries have industry specific bodies which monitor health and safety issues. Examples include the nuclear industry, mining and building. Most companies employ a manager specifically to take responsibility for Health & Safety. Risk assessments may be made internally, if managers are properly trained, or an external consultant can be hired to perform any necessary risk assessments and to review risk assessments which were made in the past.
