Hillman Hunter
Hillman was taken over by the Rootes Group and later by Chrysler in Britain in the 1970s. Hillman made a range of middle market cars including the Hillman Imp, Hillman Avenger and Hillman Hunter. Thousands of Hillman Hunters were exported in kit form to Saudi Arabia. The Hunter was available with 1500cc and 1725cc engines. It was a traditional 4 door saloon car with a middling sized boot (trunk). The acceleration from the 1725cc model was pretty good for a family saloon, basically because the body shell was smaller than the corresponding Ford Cortina or Vauxhall Cavalier, but the engine was larger. The car could still turn in 40 miles per gallon if you drove it carefully. Hillman Hunters are a rare sight now because they were very poor at resisting rust. They even seem to have been designed to rust away quickly. The door sills were the first area to succumb to rust. The wheel wells in the boot would each hold over a gallon of water from boot lid leaks. Worst of all was the box section that ran externally, under the floor pan, under the front seats. This had 1cm holes in it designed to let water and salt in but never let it out. This box section would rust through much quicker than any structural component of a car should do. |
