Low Energy bulbs
Light bulbs use 80% of the electricity they consume to produce heat instead of light. They are extremely inefficient. The EU is talking about banning ordinary filament light bulbs in the next few years. Compact Fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) have been designed to replace most filament bulbs. These use only a fifth of the electricity for the same light output. They do have some disadvantages. CFL bulbs are expensive. Modern CFL bulbs are lighter than the early designs and light up faster. There is still a noticeable warm up stage to low energy bulbs, where it starts dim and becomes brighter. Disposing of compact fluorescent light bulbs does present problems. They all contain small amounts of mercury, a metal that forms extremely toxic compounds that are easily absorbed by humans. CFLs should be disposed of along with other hazardous waste like batteries. There is another, newer, technology which offers a better replacement for filament light bulbs. This technology uses light emitting diodes, LEDs. LEDs use less than a tenth of the electricity of CFLs, last even longer and contain no mercury. Current LED lamps are too blue-white for most people, but different colour LEDs can be mixed together to give a warmer light which is more akin to that from a filament bulb. LED lamps are currently the only replacement available for spotlight bulbs and consumers should at least experiment with these modern alternatives for the high energy consumption traditional silvered spotlight bulb. |
