Move to Ireland and import your car Cars bought in Ireland carry something called Vehicle Registration tax. This is about 20% of the car's value. Irish residents have to pay VRT if they import a car from UK. If you are moving to Ireland to live you can take your car with you without paying VRT, but you need all sorts of unlikely documentation: 1. Your ferry ticket 2. Your PREVIOUS year's insurance certificate 3. Six months' bank statements from UK, showing mortgage payments, insurance dirtect debits etc. You will also need the obvious things like registration documents and MoT Cert, if applicable. When you inform your UK insurance company that you have moved to Ireland they will terminate your cover, immediately. You should be able to negotiate a two week grace period tro allow you to obtain cover from an Iris company. You will need to take your vehicle to a local vehicle registration office, where a highly paid state employee will come out and count the windows on your car! Contributor's Note By sheer chance I actually had my ferry ticket still lying around under the driver's seat in my car. Maybe this will save other people a lot of grief.
