Moving to Ireland to Teach

Secondary teachers in Ireland get 3 months off school in the summer. This is a very attractive proposition to British teachers.
There are many hidden barriers to finding a teaching position in Ireland.

1. You have to take an examination in the History of Irish Education. This is held in Dublin three or four times a year and is basically a test of your ability to write in English it seems.

2. Most Irish teaching jobs are filled before they are advertised. Ireland works on the "I know someoneā€ principle. If nobody knows you will not get a job.

3. Irish schools are small and teachers have to teach three or more subjects. Your degree must mention these subjects specifically if you are going to be able to teach these subjects.

4. The Department for Education has to grant you recognition to teach a subject before they will fund a school to pay you to teach that subject. (See 3 above).

5. Irish teachers have to go through 10 years of temporary part-time teaching appointments before they progress to temporary whole time and eventually permanent whole time teaching posts by the time they are 32 or older. UK teachers cannot short circuit this route by going straight into a permanent whole time teaching post.

6. Primary sector teachers have to learn Irish within 3 or 4 years. Many primary schools use Irish daily and without any Irish language skills you are unemployable.

7. Many first and second level schools (primary and secondary) use Irish as a teaching medium in the same way that schools in Wales use the Welsh language to teach maths, physics, history, etc.

Contributor's Note

I never knew any of this before I moved to Ireland and struggled to get a teaching job. Maybe it will help someone else.
