Private Tuition in UK
Many parents want to help their children to improve their performance at GCSE and A-level. Most do this by paying a tutor to help improve their son's or daughter's understanding of the different subjects. Most people giving private tuition are teachers or retired teachers. You will find some students giving tuition, but the standard of tuition is very low and these student tutors are a waste of money in almost every case. Tutors advertise in local newspapers or on shop community notice boards when they are looking to take on more students. If you are contacting a tutor through an advert you need to ask certain questions: 1) Are you a teacher? 2) What school do you teach at? 3) What syllabus do you teach to? 4) How long have you been teaching? 5) Do you do any exam marking? 6) Can I have 2 telephone numbers of parents of recent students you have given tuition to? 7) Do you come to my house? 8) How much do you charge? Ideally you are looking for a teacher who has at least 7 years experience in teaching the same syllabus as your son or daughter is being taught in school or college. Charges vary according to exam level, subject area and location. Remember that you are hiring a professional and you should expect to pay the same as you would for a plumber. The tutor has expenses and half of his or her income will be taken in tax and national insurance contributions. The best way to find a tutor is by asking friends if they can recommend anyone. As an alternative ring a local school and ask to be put through to the head of department in the appropriate subject. Ask if any of the teachers in that department give private tuition. Tuition agencies should be your very last resort. Tutors working for agencies are paid less per hour, because of the slice that the agency takes. Agency tutors are often those who are so poor that they do not find tutees by word of mouth |
