Reducing printer costs

Every new computer seems to come with a free inkjet printer. The free printer is normally of very poor quality and the best thing to do is to use it until the ink runs out, then give it or throw it away.

Even if you buy an inkjet printer you will spend many times the cost of the printer on ink over its lifetime. Printer ink is one thing that has not become any cheaper as technology has moved forward.

Many people, myself included have a monochrome laser printer for day-to-day Internet and internal home printing. The laser printer has more than paid for itself and I would recommend anyone to buy a low cost personal laser printer to set up as the default printer on their computer. Laser toner is only a third of the cost per sheet of inkjet ink. I unplug the inkjet to prevent it being used by others.

My own inkjet is a midrange model that cost 120 euro last year. The ink cartridges cost 80 euro for the set. Then sometimes you find that a 40 euro ink cartridge starts producing poor prints after the first 50 sheets, money wasted. My inkjet is coming to the end of its life, paper sheets jam and do not go through the mechanism in a straight line any more.

My laser is demanding a new fuser, a paper feed kit and a drum. These replacements would cost me 350 euro, for a printer that only cost that in the first place.

I am seriously thinking of replacing the two printers with a colour laser printer because the price of these machines has fallen so much and colour toner for a laser costs less per sheet printed than ink does for an inkjet printer.

Many people buy cheap, compatible cartridges, rather than the expensive original manufacturer's ones. I have tried that, disaster. HP printer cartridges, apparently, are very difficult to remanufacture reliably and I had to send 3 lots back before I gave up. I even tried refilling the HP cartridge myself using a kit. That failed to work either. Other parts of the cartridge are designed to fail at the same time as the ink runs out, so just putting more ink in is a waste of time and money.
