School Science Lab Design
School science labs are often designed by accountants, who win awards for designing awful labs at very low cost. The teachers who have to work in these laboratories usually have many good ideas that are not included. A science lab in UK needs to have provision for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Biology and Chemistry labs need lots of sinks and water supplies, as well as gas taps. Physics labs need lots of electrical sockets and blackout facilities. Chemistry labs also need fume cupboards and chemical disposal systems. All science labs need to be larger than conventional classrooms because there must be room for 30 or more students to move around safely. There should be space for every student to have somewhere to sit and write and somewhere close by to do any experimental work. Experimental work is best done at sinks and gas taps around the perimeter of the laboratory, while seating closer to the teacher is necessary for other written and discussion work. Because of the higher risk of fire, compared to ordinary classrooms there must be two exits and extra fire extinguishers need to be provided. Storage of students' bags and coats is a major problem in most school laboratories because this was not built in at the design stage. A preparation area adjacent to, but separate from the main laboratory is an expensive, but necessary requirement for practical science teaching. It allows for chemical and biological storage as well as acting as a staging area for the next lesson's equipment and solutions. |
