Transition Year in Ireland
Many parents view the transition year in Irish second level schools as a waste of time. This opinion is shared by many Irish second level teachers, but none dare express this publicly. The concept of a transition year is a noble one, with students broadening their education away from the strictly academic. A better idea though would be to move away from the LEARN THIS approach at Junior Cert and at Leaving Cert. Having a year off from conventional learning is of limited value if students have to put their nose back to the grindstone again a few months later. The way the transition year is organised is worrying. Rather than being left to individual schools and teachers to decide lesson content in this year, more central direction of at least a core learning structure would at least indicate the importance of the year's lesson content. |
