UK Dragonboating
Dragonboats are 45ft or 14m long and built of fibreglass. They are based on a traditional Chinese design and always carry an ornate head and tail made of wood and a drum. The crew of up to 20 paddlers sits facing the front of the boat. Paddlers sit in pairs, each with a single bladed paddle. This is first and foremost a team sport. A team may have male and female paddlers from 11 years old to 60 or older. The mix is what makes the sport so enjoyable. Everyone is totally supportive of each other and to anyone trying out for the first time. This really is a sport for almost everyone. You do not have to be able to swim, you do not need to be able to catch a ball and you do not have to be super fit. Neither do you have to strip down to skimpy costumes, most training is done in track suit bottoms, sweatshirts, tee shirts and old trainers. You need warm layers of clothing when paddling against a snow storm. The layers keep you warm, even when they are wet. This is a water sport and you will get wet. In England the sport has two components, a club based league programme of races and training, and a commercial, profit making sector. The commercial sector organise races and training for companies and charities. The two sectors are largely separate. The British dragonboat clubs are regionally based, in towns and cities on rivers. They draw their membership from all sections of the local community. Each club has between one and eight dragonboats. Some of the boats will be kept out of the water, in pristine condition for maximum speed in races. Club training may be on two or three evenings a week, as well as at weekends. A session will last nearly two hours, including briefing, warm ups and cooloing down exercises afterwards. There is usually between 60 and 90 minutes on the water, paddling. Races are usually on Sundays, at various venues around the country, including Cardiff, Liverpool, Nottingham and London. The National Championships are held in the autumn at Nottingham across the whole weekend.
